Fall Lilies are Blooming
September 2, 2010
Blog PictureHere's a photo (sorry it's not a good one, had to download it from the web) of our new novelty lily Loreto. If you want some, act fast, it will be gone soon.

We also have Royal Sunset, Monte Negro, and our usual orange and yellow lilies.

Even though we are heading to fall (and it IS September), I love this recipe for spicy watermelon salad. We had it at a recent Flower Market potluck:

Walla Walla Sweet Onion and Watermelon Salad (from the Walla Walla Sweet Onions Committee)

Makes 5 cups

1/4 cup orange marmalade 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro 1/4 cup finely chopped jalapenos 1 clove garlic finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 1 cup orange sections, about 1 1/2 oranges 1 cup chopped Walla Walla sweet onions 2 cups 1 inch cubed seedless watermelon 6 sprigs of cilantro

Stir together in large bowl all except the fruit, onions and cilantro sprigs. Fold in the rest, Chill at least 30 minutes, then garnish with the cilantro sprigs.

I'd like to try this without the marmalade, the raw garlic, and the oranges. Also I'd use less onion (sorry onion committee). But George (who made it for our lunch) did it according to the recipe and it was good.
